Indoor plants, in every shape and size, are currently trending. Not only do they make great apartment decor, they help purify the air in your home as well. If you’re looking to add a plant or two to your apartment and don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place! We’re sharing a list of our favorite low-maintenance plants that thrive indoors.

ALOE VERA

Aloe vera is known for its natural healing properties. The gel found inside the plant can be used to soothe cuts and burns. These low-maintenance plants like bright, indirect light, which can be found near a window. Water the plant deeply, until water runs out of the drainage hole, only when the top two inches of the soil is dry. When in doubt, it’s better to underwater this plant. Overwatering aloe vera can cause root rot.

SNAKE PLANT

Don’t have a green thumb? Then a snake plant may be perfect for you. They are one of the most low-maintenance plants and require very little water, especially during winter months. When watering, avoid pouring directly into the center of the plant. Try watering the soil around it instead. Like aloe vera, snake plants enjoy bright, indirect light; however, they tend to be a little more forgiving than most plants. Snake plants grow tall, making them a great option if you’re looking for something with a bit of height.

PEACE LILY

Peace lilies have beautiful flowers that bloom year-round. They do well in shaded areas and cooler temperatures, making them the ideal indoor plant. Peace lilies like a lot of water at once, but need time to dry out between waterings. You can tell when they need to be watered because their leaves will start to droop. Peace lilies are mildly toxic when consumed, so keep them away from children and pets by placing them on high shelves, countertops, etc.

SPIDER PLANT

Spider plants are the only “spider” you’ll want in your apartment home! These plants don’t need a ton of light—they do well in bedrooms and bathrooms. Soil should be kept moist, not soggy, especially in spring and summer. The top inch of soil should be dry before watering. You can check this by inserting your index finger into the soil. Cats are attracted to spider plants since they have a similar effect to catnip. If you own a cat, keep the plant out-of-reach—hanging is always a great option!

RUBBER PLANT

Looking for a larger statement piece? Consider a rubber plant! They prefer bright, indirect light—many say placing it near a sunny window with a sheer curtain to diffuse the light is ideal. During the growing season, the soil should be kept moist. During the dormant season, they may need water only once or twice a month. Leaves turning yellow or brown is a sign of overwatering.
