At our pet-friendly Mountlake Terrace apartments, we welcome your four-legged friends! If you have a cat, there are a few things you should do to make sure they stay entertained and happy. This will help prevent problems like the scratching of furniture, breaking of your knick-knacks, and other such behavioral issues. Here are a few tips for keeping your feline friend interested in harmless activities while you’re away:

HIDE TOYS THROUGHOUT YOUR APARTMENT

Observe your cat and see which types of toys they like best, and then hide a selection of those types in various rooms for your cat to find. This will cause your cat to burn off energy looking for them. Change them up every few days to keep things interesting.

HIDE TREATS INSIDE THE TOYS

Animals naturally look for food, and if they find some, they will persist at getting it until they succeed. This is great because some toys are made especially so that you can hide treats in them that cats can only remove by batting the toys around. With enough effort, the treat falls out of the toy and your cat can then eat it. Using these toys will keep your cat well-exercised.

PUT A BIRD FEEDER ON YOUR PATIO OR BALCONY

Cats are known for hunting birds, but they get almost as much fun out of just watching them. Put a bird feeder outside on your patio or balcony where your cat can see it, but not get to it, to provide hours of entertainment.

PROVIDE A PLAY STRUCTURE

Cat play structures allow cats to satisfy their urge to climb and do so in a way that doesn’t involve knocking things over. The best ones also have cubby-hole areas, and this may help keep your cat from being so determined to get into your cabinets. Even so, it’s a good idea to remove all knick-knacks and other items from your counters and any other place your cat typically climbs to. Put them in locked display cases to keep both them and your cat safe.
