APARTMENT LIVING
Looking for ways to beat the heat? Summers in Mountlake Terrace, Washington can reach high double-digits, but that doesn’t mean that you need to submit to the sultry weather. When temperatures start to soar, try the following tips to stay cool.
GET OUT OF THE HOUSE
No air conditioning? Grab the family and seek refuge from the heat elsewhere. Visit the local library and have story time with the kids, spend time walking the aisles of your favorite shops or spend a couple hours seeing a new movie at the matinee. Anywhere with air conditioning and fun is a great place to be this summer.
DON’T EAT, GRAZE
Eating a large meal can generate heat from within. You’ll stay cooler by eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. You’ll also want to stick with foods that require little preparation and cooking, as you don’t want to make yourself any warmer than necessary. Opt for sandwiches piled high with your favorite meats and cheeses, refreshing salads and of course an icy glass of tea or lemonade.
FREEZE YOUR BEDDING
If you’re having trouble sleeping at night due to the warm weather, consider freezing your linens for about an hour before bedtime. Stick your sheets, pillowcase and even your blanket in a protective plastic bag, then stick the bag in the freezer. When you’re ready to sleep, you’ll be welcomed by a cool bed.
SOAK YOUR FEET
Soak both feet in a bucket filled with ice water. As heat generally radiates from your feet upwards, soaking your feet in icy water will help to cool the rest of the body. Don’t leave your feet in too long. A quick dunk is all that’s needed.
RETHINK YOUR OUTFITS
Not all attire is summer-friendly. When it gets too hot, stick to loose-fitting, light-colored clothing that will allow airflow to circulate around your skin. Breathable sneakers or sandals are best. If possible, stick to just a swimsuit and flip-flops.
