The weather is finally getting warmer, and you don’t want to waste a gorgeous spring sitting inside your Mountlake Terrace apartment. It’s time to get outdoors to soak up the sun and fresh air. Getting outdoors is great for your mental health, and getting active boosts your overall wellness by helping you maintain a healthy weight and prevent disease. The great news — it’s easy to get started. Here are three fun activities you can enjoy outdoors this spring. Try one or give them all a shot.
Activity #1 – Walking/Hiking
Simply taking a walk around the neighborhood is a great way to get moving and get some time outdoors. If you want to kick the adventure up a notch, hiking takes walking to the next level. Find a nearby hiking trail or a local peak. Walking over different terrains challenges your body even more. Take your pet along for a day of walking or hiking so everyone exercises together. You can also plan a day at a fair or amusement park, so you have a blast on the rides, but you still get a lot of walking in.
Activity #2 – Cycling
If you have a bike, cycling is a fun way to explore the great outdoors while boosting your activity level. Research local bike trails and spend some time getting off the beaten path. Mountain bike trails can also be fun if you’re a more advanced cyclist who enjoys a challenge. Cycling is a great workout, and you’ll cover a lot of ground, giving you the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery that comes with springtime.
Activity #3 – Outdoor Sports
Do you like more excitement than walking or cycling? Outdoor sports might be just the thing. A game of basketball on a local court with friends gets you outside and burns calories. You may want to join a local baseball or softball team to enjoy a favorite sport with others. Another idea is to grab a tennis racket and head out to the tennis courts with a friend. You’ll get some sun, you’ll improve your fitness level, and it’s good for your mental health to engage in some recreation with friends.
These are just three great activities you can try out this spring. Other great outdoor options include kayaking, rocking climbing, jogging, swimming, and golfing. If you meet some friends along the way who are looking for apartments in Mountlake Terrace, WA, have them give us a call to find out what floor plans we have available today.

Spring allergies are no fun for anyone. Whether you are reacting to pollen in the air or dust in your home, allergies can make life difficult to manage. If you feel like allergies are getting the better of you, but you don’t want to take medication, here are some natural remedies from ingredients that many people have in their Mountlake Terrace apartments that might bring some relief.
1. Drink Apple Cider Vinegar
Do you have some apple cider vinegar in your kitchen? This is a surprising remedy for allergies. Swallowing a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar can reduce mucus production and cleanse your lymphatic system, which will reduce the impact of allergies.
2. Utilize a Neti Pot
A neti pot helps clear out the sinus cavities of gunk that can hide inside, which often includes allergens like dirt and pollen. Flushing the nasal passages will remove the mucus and some of the dirt and pollen that may make your allergies worse. While this won’t cure your allergies, it can relieve your symptoms and help you feel a little better.
3. Take a Probiotic
Allergies occur because of the immune system, and when the immune system is not balanced, your reactions to allergens become more intense. Probiotics are helpful in making your immune system respond as it should. They promote beneficial bacteria in your body that can fight some of the symptoms of allergies, helping your immune system function properly and reducing your symptoms.
4. Use the Power of Bees
Bees interact with pollen when they collect nectar from flowers to make honey. This means that honey made in your local environment contains trace amounts of pollen. Taking a tablespoon a day will teach your body’s immune system that the pollen is not a danger. You can also use bee pollen to introduce small amounts of pollen to your immune system to reduce its effect on your body. The key to effectiveness is to use honey or bee pollen from local sources.
With these natural remedies in hand, you will be ready to enjoy the outdoors. Come visit the Mountlake Terrace, WA apartments at Taluswood to enjoy amenities like a natural creek walk that make enjoying the outdoors easy.

A visit to the hot tub at your apartments in Mountlake Terrace is about more than just having fun. A dip in this swirling pool of warm, soothing water can actually rejuvenate your mind and body. You can go once a month, weekly or even daily to reap the rewards. When you commit to daily soaks in the hot tub, here are a few benefits you might enjoy.
Decreased Stress Levels
With every minute you spend soaking in the hot tub, you can feel the stress of the day melting away. The hot tub achieves this feat by relieving the tension in your body, allowing your mind to relax at the same time. As stress slips away, you can make better decisions in handling the problems you face to remain stress-free in the long run.
Relief of Muscle Pain
The jets' moving the warm water around acts as a massage of sorts to help relieve muscle pain. The pleasant water temperature also helps relieve muscle tension and reduces pain. As the water heats your muscles, more blood flows to those areas, promoting healing and keeping pain levels down for good. Unlike many pain-relief medications, you can use the hot tub on a daily basis without worry about side effects and other complications.
Boosted Sleep Quality at Your Apartments in Mountlake Terrace
With the stress relief and relaxation benefits that come with chilling in the hot tub, you also can enjoy a boost to your sleep quality. You will need to time your visits to the hot tub at your Mountlake Terrace apartments in the evening hours. The later visits can prepare your mind and body for the process of falling asleep. By the time you arrive back at your apartments, you will likely be able to fall asleep quickly and stay asleep all night long.
If you cannot easily go for a dip in the hot tub at your apartments, consider finding an upgrade that will best suit your needs. To learn more, simply call (855) 450-2838 and ask our team at Taluswood Apartments about our available floorplans.

Winter wellness is important! During the cold and flu season, many people are exposed to viruses that can keep them down and out for days. Focusing on wellness at this time of year can help you stay healthy. These four tips can help you fend off illnesses at a time when they're prevalent.
1. Wash Hands Frequently
You already wash your hands throughout the day, but in winter it's smart to wash your hands more often, especially after touching doorknobs, garbage can lids and other surfaces that are touched by other people. Keep hand sanitizer on your desk at work, in your purse or on your dresser at home. Use it frequently!
Keep lotion on hand as well. Frequent hand washing and hand sanitizer can be drying for the skin.
2. Exercise
Exercising helps your body stay strong. It also helps you keep the weight off! Establish an indoor exercise routine to help you stay fit throughout the long winter. If the building where you live has stairs, walk the stairs many times each day to exercise your leg muscles. Do extra cleaning inside to keep your body moving, and buy a pair of lightweight dumbbells that you can lift while you watch television.
If you have a dog, take your pet for extra walks on mild winter days! You'll both benefit from the extra activity.
3. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep deprivation can compromise your immune system. Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep every night. If you're not getting enough sleep, rearrange your schedule to go to bed earlier in the evening. Not sure if you're getting enough sleep? Start tracking how much you're getting. Then, evaluate how you feel throughout the day; you should have energy!
It's helpful to know the symptoms of sleep deprivation. Symptoms include depression, forgetfulness, clumsiness, and impaired judgment.
If you suffer from insomnia, consult with your physician. Sleep deprivation can have serious long-term effects, so take care of this problem soon.

]]>The post What Is High-Intensity Interval Training? appeared first on Taluswood Apartments Blog.

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a form of cardio exercise involving both intense and light exertion. HIIT might also be known as interval training. The goal of HIIT is to work up to your near maximum intensity (like running), then back it off to light training (like walking). If you do this back and forth several times, you’ll get a great workout in a short amount of time.
Below, we’ll go over several ways you can incorporate high-intensity interval training.
Interval Training Workouts
1. Biking Fast and Slow
Bike at 80 percent to 90 percent of your endurance for 120 seconds (2 minutes) before switching to 60 seconds of slower biking. Repeat this pattern four to five times.
If you’d like to do the slower biking for a longer period of time, you can do 2 minutes of intense biking following by 2 minutes of slow biking.
2. Running and Walking
Start by running at 90 percent of your endurance for 60 seconds. Switch to 60 seconds of jogging (or walking). Repeat this pattern four to five times.
3. Burpees and Walking in Place
Do as many burpees as you can for 30 seconds, then 60 seconds of walking in place. Repeat this pattern three to four times. You should do the burpees at 90 percent of your endurance, but as you continue the pattern, you can slow down slightly.
Why Is HIIT Good for You?
HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is great for getting in a quick workout when you don’t have a lot of time or if you want to lose weight. There are two main processes going on with these types of workouts.
First, we have the fast-twitch muscle effect. Fast-twitch fibers in your muscles are effective for short and powerful bursts of energy. These fibers require a lot of fuel and energy to function; therefore, when they are utilized in the body, they burn up a lot of energy (calories).
Next, we have the after-burn effect. This effect occurs after the high-intensity part of the training workout. Essentially, your body continues burning energy (calories) even while you are in the low-intensity part of the workout.

Your body needs to move to stay healthy, but when you're already going a thousand miles an hour every day, how do you stop to fit in a proper workout? Rest assured, there are ways! Our Mountlake Terrace apartments offer our residents plenty of amenities, but there are plenty of opportunities to get your body moving away from our community, too.
Here are some ideas:
Look for Lunchtime Classes
Getting up and moving during the day is difficult, particularly for those who are stuck behind a screen all day. Lunchtime classes get the blood flowing while breaking up your day. You'll be more energized when you return to the office after a good yoga or cycling session.
Take Walking Breaks
When you start to stress out about your workload, get up and walk away. Grab a colleague and take a brisk stroll around the perimeter of your workplace. This will get your heart rate up just enough to keep it healthy without feeling like you've just run a marathon when you return back to work.
Hit the Gym Immediately After Work
Don't pass go. Don't collect $200. Before you head to the couch and hit "play" on your favorite show, take sixty minutes to show your body how much you appreciate it. A few minutes on the mat, or a workout with free weights, can really bring your mind and body back to the place it needs to be. You don't have to stay at the gym for hours at a time; it just takes a few moments to make your efforts have an impact on your day-to-day schedule.
Implore the Assistance of the Internet
Nobody said you have to pay for a gym membership to stay fit. There are hundreds of online workouts available 24 hours a day. Some of the simplest exercises can be done in your office, living room or bedroom. The key is finding a few workouts that really work for your specific needs.
If you're finding it hard to stay fit, look for an apartment community that embraces a healthy style of living. Our Taluswood Apartments feature a creek-side walking trail, bike racks, a tennis court, a fully-equipped fitness center and more. Stop by to see the amazing amenities we offer our residents. We can't wait to see you!

Sleep. It's so natural for some; so elusive for others. If you fall into the latter category, you know all too well the many ways that a poor night's sleep can negatively affect your daytime performance. Need help getting a better night's rest? Then check out these four tips that should help you get the needed Z's you've been searching for.
Exercise More
It only makes sense that if you're physically tired, you're going to have an easier time falling asleep. Try and exercise every day, even if you can only go out for a walk. One recent study showed that a moderate aerobic workout, such as walking, can reduce the time it takes for you to fall asleep and can also increase the length of time you sleep.
Turn Off Your Electronics
The artificial blue light that's emitted from your electronic devices, such as smartphones and televisions, can actually delay your body's natural internal clock that tells it when to sleep. That is why it's important to turn off your devices about an hour before you go to bed.
Avoid Alcohol
Yes, a glass of your favorite alcoholic beverage might relax you and make you feel sleepy, but it can also negatively affect the quality of your rest. Studies have shown that drinking before bedtime reduces rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which is believed to be the most restorative stage.
Evaluate Your Bedding
If you've had the same mattress and pillows for years, it's time for new ones. Most mattresses are only good for about nine to ten years. And if you often wake up with a stiff neck, it's time to buy new pillows. You may have to try a few to find one that suits your sleeping style, but it will be money well spent if you can get a better night's sleep.
Have you been searching for apartments in Mountlake Terrace that will help you get a better night's sleep? Then check out our apartments that are located in a peaceful and wooded neighborhood of Mountlake Terrace. Our community also boasts a fully-equipped fitness center, a creekside walking trail and a heated outdoor swimming pool so you can get the exercise you'll need for a good night's sleep.
