Your pets are like family. Protecting them in the winter is no different than protecting your own children from the cold, wet weather. Simple steps can protect your pets from the cold and keep them safe from injuries and illness. Be aware of the weather and temperature before you take your pets outside. It’s important that you take the extra steps to protect them from harsh, winter weather.

PROTECT YOUR PETS

There are several ways you can protect your pet when you are outside. Always keep them on a leash and be constantly aware of how far they can stray away from you. This will prevent them from trying to enter areas they shouldn’t or getting caught on bushes or equipment. Always make sure your pet has an identification tag on their collar in case they break away from you. When you live in an apartment, it is important that the office knows as much about your pet as possible. This will allow them to return your pet to you in a timely fashion if it gets lost.

KEEP THEM WARM!

If your pets are kept inside most of the day, being outside in frigid temperatures may be hard for them. They may not have a thick enough coat to keep them warm if they are outside for long periods of time. It is important that if your pets are outside for any length of time in colder temperatures to check them thoroughly when they are brought inside. This includes the delicate pads of their feet which can easily become chapped from prolonged exposure to very cold temperatures. Dry them off if they are wet and provide them a place where they can get warm.
