APARTMENT LIVING
Rushed residents of Mountlake Terrace apartments often feel like they don’t get enough done even though they’re constantly in a hurry. This results from a lack of efficiency, the feeling that one must always be “doing something” – or usually, a combination of the two. Try these tips to escape this trap:
AVOID MULTITASKING
Studies have shown that people’s working IQs actually drop while multitasking. This leads to more errors on the tasks in question, and in turn, that causes many tasks to be redone or touched up after they should have been finished. Make a habit of focusing on just one thing at once. This will give you the edge you need to get great results.
DO REPETITIVE TASKS FACTORY-STYLE
On an assembly line, workers don’t do their jobs as a series of steps. Instead, one person will do one part of the entire job – and do it over and over again. Then, the next stage is completed by the next worker.
Translate this to your home life by applying the same basic principle to repetitive jobs like washing dishes. If you have a project where you can do the same small sub-task over and over, do so before moving on to the next step. It’s much faster this way!
DO THE TINY TASKS FIRST
Things that only take two minutes or so should be done before tackling bigger projects. These tasks may seem tiny, but they’ll be continual distractions until they’re done. Not only that, they’ll add up if you let them accumulate. Get them out of the way for a sense of accomplishment that’ll prepare you for your bigger jobs.
REMEMBER: HASTE MAKES WASTE
Avoid rushing whenever possible. That’s not to say to procrastinate! Simply make sure that you always take the time to do a job well. Redoing things is a frustrating waste of time and energy. Spending 15 minutes to do a job right is far more efficient and motivating than doing a job in 10 minutes and then having to spend another 20 debugging it.
