"exercise"

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a form of cardio exercise involving both intense and light exertion. HIIT might also be known as interval training. The goal of HIIT is to work up to your near maximum intensity (like running), then back it off to light training (like walking). If you do this back and forth several times, you’ll get a great workout in a short amount of time.

Below, we’ll go over several ways you can incorporate high-intensity interval training.

Interval Training Workouts

1. Biking Fast and Slow

Bike at 80 percent to 90 percent of your endurance for 120 seconds (2 minutes) before switching to 60 seconds of slower biking. Repeat this pattern four to five times.

If you’d like to do the slower biking for a longer period of time, you can do 2 minutes of intense biking following by 2 minutes of slow biking.

2. Running and Walking

Start by running at 90 percent of your endurance for 60 seconds. Switch to 60 seconds of jogging (or walking). Repeat this pattern four to five times.

3. Burpees and Walking in Place

Do as many burpees as you can for 30 seconds, then 60 seconds of walking in place. Repeat this pattern three to four times. You should do the burpees at 90 percent of your endurance, but as you continue the pattern, you can slow down slightly.

Why Is HIIT Good for You?

HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is great for getting in a quick workout when you don’t have a lot of time or if you want to lose weight. There are two main processes going on with these types of workouts.

First, we have the fast-twitch muscle effect. Fast-twitch fibers in your muscles are effective for short and powerful bursts of energy. These fibers require a lot of fuel and energy to function; therefore, when they are utilized in the body, they burn up a lot of energy (calories).

Next, we have the after-burn effect. This effect occurs after the high-intensity part of the training workout. Essentially, your body continues burning energy (calories) even while you are in the low-intensity part of the workout.
